ISO 14067 represents a rigorous international standard for formally quantifying and publicly reporting the exact carbon footprint of products. The framework defines strict empirical requirements for lifecycle greenhouse gas assessment at the specific product level. ISO 14067 depends heavily on precise lifecycle boundaries, explicitly defined functional units, strict data quality rules, and perfectly consistent emission factors.
The underlying data architecture must rigorously cover all relevant physical lifecycle stages and rigorous allocation methods declared by the global standard. Systemic integrity fails completely when major lifecycle stages are omitted, generic industry data replaces product-specific physical data without transparent disclosure, or functional units shift quietly between product comparisons. Product footprints then completely lose all market comparability and scientific validity.
Comparing the footprint of two industrial materials remains completely meaningless if one assessment applies a limited scope boundary and the other uses a comprehensive total lifecycle boundary. The mandatory audit trail includes explicit lifecycle models, precise functional unit definitions, empirical data sources, formal assumptions registers, raw calculation files, and conformity statements explicitly demonstrating absolute alignment with the international standard.
Comparing product footprints remains meaningless when operations apply conflicting system boundaries.
