Net zero describes a strict physical state where greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere equal the exact quantities removed through verified natural or technological processes. The Paris Climate Agreement identifies net zero as an absolute requirement for global climate stabilisation. Achieving this critical balance requires deep, aggressive emissions reduction across energy, global transport, heavy industry, and agriculture.
Residual emissions remaining after absolute reduction require permanent removal through reforestation, soil carbon restoration, or engineered carbon capture technology. Net zero therefore represents a strict atmospheric balance rather than the absolute elimination of all emissions. Climate governance frameworks increasingly require national strategies and corporate transition plans perfectly aligned with science-based net-zero pathways.
Severe criticism arises when cheap offsetting mechanisms replace direct industrial emissions reduction. Credible net-zero strategies mandate the absolute reduction of fossil fuel dependence before permitting reliance on atmospheric removal methods. Diagnostic review evaluates the strict emissions reduction trajectory, the reliance on purchased offsets, and physical consistency with climate stabilisation pathways.
Capital markets increasingly penalise corporations substituting accounting tricks for verified decarbonisation.
