Lifecycle refers to the complete sequence of physical stages associated with a product, industrial asset, or operational activity, spanning raw material extraction through heavy manufacture, global transport, continuous use, mechanical maintenance, and ultimate end-of-life disposal. The concept defines the absolute data architecture across time and physical responsibility. Robust measurement requires formally declared stages, rigid boundaries for inclusion, and highly consistent treatment of product reuse, industrial refurbishment, and material disposal.
Partial lifecycle claims describe convenient fragments rather than total performance. Integrity fails when inconvenient upstream stages are excluded, highly impactful operational phases remain ignored, or theoretical end-of-life assumptions are selected specifically to minimise atmospheric totals. Truncated lifecycles aggressively shift the environmental burden elsewhere while preserving apparent corporate efficiency.
A product claimed as infinitely recyclable but lacking any physical collection infrastructure possesses a theoretical lifecycle benefit alongside a catastrophic practical lifecycle failure. The formal audit trail includes detailed lifecycle stage definitions, physical boundary diagrams, formal assumptions registers, explicit calculation methods, and comprehensive source datasets demonstrating precisely how environmental impacts were allocated across all operational stages.
