Embodied Carbon

Embodied carbon defines the greenhouse gas emissions associated with raw materials and construction activities across an entire physical lifecycle, explicitly excluding operational energy use. The concept captures all emissions irreversibly locked into the physical structure before an infrastructure asset becomes operational. Embodied carbon relies on strict lifecycle boundaries, declared manufacturing stages, and consistent empirical data sources, including independently verified environmental product declarations.

Heavy construction methods, material quantities, and engineering specification choices aggressively drive final results. Systemic integrity fails when generic industry factors replace productspecific physical data without public disclosure, material production stages remain selectively excluded, or continuous updates to engineering specifications are not rigorously reflected in the final carbon calculations. Apparent carbon reductions frequently result from strategic boundary changes rather than genuine engineering improvement.

Embodied carbon is spent immediately during construction. Unlike operational carbon emitted slowly over fifty years, embodied carbon becomes completely irreversible the exact moment the industrial concrete is poured.

Once the concrete is poured, the embodied carbon is spent forever.
