Material passports function as highly structured empirical datasets describing the physical composition, structural properties, and future recovery potential of specific materials used in an industrial asset or manufactured product. The digital framework supports absolute physical traceability, direct material reuse, and strict circular decision-making across global supply chains. Material passports depend heavily on explicitly defined data fields, highly consistent material classification, and rigid digital linkage to specific asset or component identifiers.
The underlying data architecture must remain permanently accessible and continuously updateable over the entire asset lifecycle to retain any functional value. Systemic integrity fails completely when passports rely on generic industry assumptions, lack active update mechanisms, or remain disconnected from actual physically installed materials. Static or deeply incomplete passports create the dangerous illusion of confidence without delivering any physical recoverability.
A passport holds functional utility exclusively if the dataset reflects the current physical reality of the asset. The necessary audit trail includes comprehensive bills of materials, formal supplier declarations, exact product datasheets, digital records tied to physical asset identifiers, and strict governance controls confirming data accuracy.
