Operational carbon refers to greenhouse gas emissions arising directly from the continuous use and maintenance of a physical asset over time. The metric explicitly excludes all emissions embedded in the original construction materials. Operational carbon is constructed through strictly defined boundaries, operational scopes, energy sources, heavy usage assumptions, and extended time horizons.
The data architecture relies exclusively on measured energy consumption, actual operating profiles, and formally declared emission factors applied consistently across reporting periods. Integrity fails completely when theoretical usage assumptions replace real empirical consumption, physical operational changes remain unreflected in the data, or boundaries intentionally exclude highly significant operational phases. Forecast operational carbon presented as measured environmental performance distorts accountability entirely.
A theoretical design prediction never equals an operational reality. The gap between designed performance and actual physical performance is where the integrity of sustainability data collapses. The rigorous audit trail includes formal energy meters, continuous fuel records, precise operating schedules, strict maintenance logs, emission factor sources, and locked calculation workbooks linking actual consumption to reported totals.
Operational carbon represents the running cost of the environmental mortgage.
